BACKGROUND:
Joel was born in DeLand, Florida and was graduated from DeLand High School in 1955 and from the University of the South (Sewanee) in 1959, with a BS degree in mathematics. In college he was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta social fraternity. After serving in the Navy for about three years he married Anne Lawrence on June 1, 1963 and started law school at the University of Florida, in the fall of 1963 where he was a member of the Law Review and the Phi Delta Phi legal fraternity.
After graduation in 1965, he was employed by the firm of MacMillan, Newett and Adams in Delray Beach, Florida and practiced with that firm until April of 1985, when he joined the firm of Jones and Foster as the managing partner for their Delray Beach branch office. He left that firm in April of 1993 and opened his own practice in Delray when his daughter, Elizabeth, was graduating from Stetson Law School.
Mr. Strawn is a shareholder in the Delray Beach law firm of Strawn & Monaghan, P.A. and is “Of Counsel” for the Tallahassee law firm of Metzger, Grossman, Furlow and Bayo, LLC. His practice includes health care, real estate, probate and estate and corporate law. He has served as General Counsel to Bethesda Memorial Hospital, in Boynton Beach, Florida, since 1970.
